Love them or hate them, you have to respect them.
Baseball’s big kids on the block, the New York Yankees, clinched the 2009 World Series with last night’s 7-3 Game 6 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.
Series MVP Hideki Matsui pounded out a two-run homer and a two-run double to help the Yankees reach their 27th title in franchise history.
It’s the Yankees’ first championship since 2000, and it’s a big one for Alex Rodriguez.
Winning the first title of his career, A-Rod shook the perception that he crumbles in crunch time. He had a .365 batting average throughout the playoffs to go with a laundry list of big hits, six home runs and 18 RBIs.
“He’s a world champion,” general manager Brian Cashman said to reporters after the game. “No one can say anything about him anymore. He’s performed in October. He’s performed on the biggest stage. He’s got a World Series ring coming his way, and he deserves it.”
While some detractors may point to New York’s checkbook as the reason for its success, we can say the Yankees earned it by beating a darn good Phillies team.
In honor of New York’s championship, we’re carrying the official Yankees championship locker room t-shirt.
You may recognize it from the footage of last night’s celebration, however your t-shirt will not arrive covered in champagne.
