Thursday trivia: The ball bounces off the wall… What’s the call?

August 12, 2010

It’s Thursday, which means it’s time for our weekly baseball rules trivia question.

Here’s how it works: We’ll give you a game scenario. You tell us what call the umpire should make, if the umpire should make a call it all.

Without further ado, here it is.

With a runner on second, the batter hits a fly ball headed for deep center.

The fielder follows it to the warning track and catches it after it bounces off the wall (but doesn’t hit the ground).

Without tagging up, the runner rounds third and crosses home. What’s the call?

Thursday trivia: Fielder tries to make a catch in the dugout… What’s the call?

July 15, 2010

It’s Thursday, and that means it’s time for trivia.

The way we play is simple. We give you a scenario from a baseball game. You tell us what call the umpire should make — if the umpire should make a call at all.

Here’s this week’s question:

A batter pops a foul ball headed for the dugout. Several players are standing inside the dugout, near the railing.

The fielder tries to reach over the railing to make the catch, but the players in the dugout refuse to move, and they prevent him from making the catch.

What’s the call?

Thursday trivia: Pop up on a bunt… What’s the call?

July 1, 2010

It’s time, once again, for our weekly baseball rules trivia question.

Here’s how it works: We give you a scenario from a baseball game. You tell us what call the umpire should make, if the umpire should make a call at all.

Here’s this week’s question.

Bases loaded, no outs. The batter bunts and pops the ball between home and the pitcher’s mound. Fearing the ball will be caught, all runners hold their bases.

The ball hits the ground and spins back to the catcher, who is standing on home plate. The catcher then tosses to the third baseman, standing on the bag, who relays to the second baseman at second.

What’s the call?

Thursday trivia: The ball goes into the fielder’s shirt… What’s the call?

June 24, 2010

It’s that time again! It’s Thursday, and it’s time for our weekly baseball rules trivia.

Here’s how it works. We give you a scenario of something happening during a baseball game, and you tell us what call the umpire should make.

Without further ado, here’s this week’s question.

The batter hits a hard grounder to the first baseman. It hops off his glove and drops inside his shirt, which was not buttoned at the top.

Unable to remove the ball before the batter reaches first, the fielder places his hand over the shirt, grabs the ball and beats the man to first.

What’s the call?

Know the answer? Post it here, give us a Tweet or find us on Facebook.

While you think it over, here’s a video of one of our favorite pre-pitch rituals.
